Private Renting in Edinburgh
Since there is a high demand for Council, Housing Association and Housing Co-op properties in Edinburgh, most of our customers can wait some time before their bid is successful.

You may, therefore, want to explore other housing solutions which may meet your needs in the short or long term. This section provides you with links to a number of different housing options in Edinburgh.

Edinburgh Landlord Accreditation Allows tenants to find a property to rent in the areas they want to live in with a professional and reputable landlord.

City Lets Here you can search for properties and flats to rent or let, short term and festival lets, student accommodation, parking spaces and flat share. City Lets only accept adverts from accredited landlords.

Student Pad On this website you can search for student houses, flats, halls and properties for sale. Messages can also be posted for free for rooms wanted.

LHA-Direct website helps tenants renting accommodation from a private landlord to calculate the amount of Housing Benefit available to them from their Local Authority.

Private Letting Agents

When considering using a letting agent it’s a good idea to check to see if they are members of a regulatory body like ARLA (Association of Residential Letting Agents) or NALS (National Approved Letting Agents).

This means that they have trained staff, have a good knowledge of tenancy law and they have a complaints procedure. They should have a good local knowledge and may have a choice of property in the area you want.

A list of private letting agencies in Edinburgh, who we understand accept tenants in receipt of local housing allowance or housing benefit is available from LETWISE. These agencies will ask you to pay a deposit, the first month’s rent in advance and an administration charge. Administration charges vary from company to company. We can also give advice on finding a deposit.

If you would like LETWISE to advise you how to find a property to rent, contact 0131 529 7454 or e-mail letwise@edinburgh.gov.uk
