Council Sheltered
Accessible Homes
Some homes are more easily accessible than others. This may be due to the design and location of the home or because it can be readily adapted. Such properties may be of particular interest to disabled people.
Housing Support
Housing Support is a range of services that are available to assist an individual or family with particular needs. Support is arranged on an individual basis and sometimes there may be a separate charge for this in addition to rent.
Sheltered and Alarm Wired Housing
All Sheltered Housing and Alarm Wired properties have a community alarm facility. This provides a direct link to the Housing Support service. A charge may be applied for this facility in addition to rent.
For further advice on accessible homes and housing support please contact Community Care Housing on 0131 529 7676 or e mail communitycarehousing@edinburgh.gov.uk.
Cairn Housing Association
Cairn Housing Association provides a Housing Support Service for older people in 6 very sheltered houses and 1 sheltered housing complex, located in excellent locations across the city. Different levels of support are provided in their sheltered and very sheltered housing, the differences are outlined below.
Sheltered Housing
This type of housing is mainly suitable for people aged 60 and over who, while able to live independently in their own home, would benefit from a member of staff on site during the day and an alarm call service. There is a Sheltered Housing Services Manager on site between 8.30am and 3.30pm each day to offer advice and support.
Younger people with a disability may sometimes be allocated this type of housing if it is considered that through medical or physical disability they would benefit from the support service provided.
Very Sheltered
This service allows older people to live in a supported but independent environment within community settings.
Residents have their own bed/sitting room with en-suite facilities. Meals are provided in a communal dining area.
Staff are available day and night to provide social and emotional support, provide meals and cleaning services and maintain a safe and homely living environment. They can also provide help in an emergency and in accessing other services. e.g. care at home.
The monthly charge for very sheltered housing includes food, cleaning, building maintenance and all bills
Castle Rock Edinvar Housing Association
Castle Rock Edinvar Housing Association has 8 Sheltered Housing developments in Edinburgh. We also have another 8 developments throughout the Lothians.
Our Sheltered Housing consists of independent tenancies with housing support for people over 60 years of age.
All our developments are different. Most have a lift but if there are only 2 floors they may have a stair lift. They all have some landscaped communal garden area and limited car parking.
Each development has a Sheltered Housing Manager who works Monday to Friday 9a.m. to 5.p.m. They are there to offer advice and guidance on the facilities within the development itself and also services in the wider community. They will also help to get you any support you may need so you can continue to live independently.
Flats are normally unfurnished 1 bedroom flats with kitchen, lounge, bedroom and bathroom with bath and or/shower. They are easy to look after and live in – central heating, windows that are easy to clean from inside, easy to reach electric sockets, and grab rails in the bath/shower room. There is a personal alarm system for emergencies. There is a communal lounge for tenants to use for social gatherings and also a laundry. There is a Guest Room for family and friends when they come to stay.
The main benefit of Sheltered Housing is that you would have independence with support, safety and security and social interaction with people of your own age.
Dunedin Canmore Housing Association
Sheltered Housing
Dunedin Canmore Housing Association has 6 sheltered housing developments in Edinburgh, in Haymarket, Dalry, Gorgie, Stenhouse, Merchiston and Royston. These offer a self contained flat, with communal facilities such as a residents lounge, lift and laundry. There is also a sheltered housing manager, who provides assistance and support to tenants, and responds to emergencies when they are on duty.
In addition there is a 24 hour alarm system, where residents can summon assistance in an emergency when the sheltered manager is off duty.
One of our developments, at Cathay Court, Merchiston, is for the Chinese elderly. The manager here speaks Cantonese and English, and also helps the tenants with translating and interpreting, as the residents here mainly speak Cantonese only. Applicants for sheltered housing need to be over 50, and have some need for the support services provided by the sheltered manager.

Trust Housing Association Ltd
Sheltered Housing
Our sheltered housing consists of self-contained flats which are mainly suitable for people over 60 years of age who, whilst able to live independently in their own home, would benefit from a member of staff on site during the day and an alarm service. Occasionally we do offer tenancies to people under 60 years of age if they have a medical need for this type of housing and would benefit from the support service provided.
Each sheltered development benefits from a communal lounge, laundry, guest rooms for family or friends and landscaped communal garden areas. A Sheltered Housing Co-ordinator is on duty Monday to Friday, with an emergency alarm system for assistance during off duty hours.
Amenity Housing
This development is similar to sheltered housing but has no communal facilities and no on-site staff. A local representative calls in one day a week and each house is linked to an alarm service and all houses are on the ground floor with easy access.
Our sheltered properties in Edinburgh are in Abbeyhill, Bingham, Joppa, Corstorphine and Stockbridge and the amenity development in Corstorphine. The Abbeyhill development is mainly for the hard of hearing or profoundly deaf persons and the development has various aids to help make life easier, eg flashing lights when the door bell rings.
